Question by MetroGirl: What is an appropriate upper age limit for children in opposite sex locker rooms?
I use my university's gym and locker room (which includes semi-private showers). However, they lease the pool (and hence use of the locker rooms) to a private swim club in the area, which gives lessons to children in the late afternoon. Many of the children are accompanied by nannies. There is also a mix of different cultures. Some of the female nannies and parents bring all of the children into the women's locker room - including boys who look 5 or 6 years old. The only policy they have are that children are not allowed in the fitness center and locker rooms ... which obviously is in conflict with renting out the pool for children̢۪s swim lessons. The staff has brought up the problem to parents/nannies, but with little impact since they cant adequately monitor the locker rooms.
So what is the appropriate age for boys to stop being in the women's locker room? I am Ok with the ones in diapers, but what is the age limit cut off? What is the acceptable standard?
Thank you for the answers. They provided some good insight for someone who does not have kids yet and some things to consider. A friend said who has a boy, said potty training is a good cut off. I checked policies at other universities. The range went from "4 and over" to "8 and younger," with most stating a cut off at 4and one prohibited all children of the opposite sex. Two private gyms in the area have the cut off as 3 and the other prohibits all children of opposite sex. While I am more sympathetic to the parents from your answers, I will send a note to the gym manager about possibly establishing a policy. It is a university, and there are private and community pools in the area that are designed for families. Thanks for your input. It was helpful and got me thinking about the mother's view.

I would say 5 but, you do what you have to do. If you are uncomfortable with it complain to management.
